Perfect Break

◉ ◉ ◉ ◉ ◉  2024 August

Lovely welcome from Anne & Edmund. Delightful couple who are happy to chat, or leave you be. Welcome pack on arrival which was good. All the facilities are good quality. The setting is brilliant if all you want to do is relax, use of the grounds and the walk are a bonus, as well as waking up to the sound of a woodpecker on the bird feeders. Two trains an hour pass by, but this is not intrusive.

A relaxing and unique cottage

◉ ◉ ◉ ◉ ◉  2024 April

As soon as you turn off into the lane off the A64 you realise this is going to be a fantastic unique setting for a relaxing break. The accommodation was exactly as described in the literature, spotlessly clean and great welcome. Excellent quality welcome pack of provisions. Occasional passing trains no bother at all, indeed it was one of the attractions and nothing at night. The provision of an EV charging point was a real bonus as it took away the stress of finding overpriced public chargers. Couldn’t find anything to fault and wished we had booked for longer.

Superb Weekend

◉ ◉ ◉ ◉ ◉  2023 September

On arrival we were greeted by Anne and Edmund (and Luna) found them to be warm and friendly. Shown to and around our accommodation and a nice touch was the welcome pack. The accommodation was in an excellent condition, well preserved and maintained, well laid out with everything you need for a short or long stay. We stayed for the Bank Holiday weekend in August with our puppy Honey. The Property is well situated for visiting the North Yorkshire Moors and the East Coast, or for just walking the woods surrounding the property. Being an old Railway Station on a working line, (York - Scarborough) the trains running pass didn't bother us at all. Overall we had a wonderful time, and would certainly return. All credit to Anne and Edmund for maintaining such a beautiful Station in a beautiful location.

Heavenly North Yorkshire home

◉ ◉ ◉ ◉ ◉  2023 July

This cottage is a hidden gem in the real sense of the word, tucked at the end of a lane amongst woodland, yet only just off the main road to Malton. The Crown & Cushion pub is walkable but only a few mins to drive and was very welcoming with excellent food. This is the perfect place to base yourself to busy every attraction in North Yorkshire and there are too many to do in one visit. The area is full of history, grand houses, magnificent vistas and friendly people - just like the owners of Platform One, Anne & Edmund with their wonderful lurcher Luna really make you feel at home here and no detail is left out. The kitchen is marvellous and the lounge/diner is spacious and comfortable too - the water pressure here is amazing so a hot power shower really sets you up for the day. Birds feed right outside your window and the surrounding, partly wild, gardens are an added bonus. It was our second visit and I’m sure we will return.

Sunny days in an idyllic setting

◉ ◉ ◉ ◉ ◉  2023 June

The accommodation was lovely, in an idyllic countryside setting, awakening each morning to beautiful birdsong. Anne and Edmund made us so welcome. Our saluki, Tilly, had a great run around with their lurcher Luna. Malton, Whitby and Eden Camp were nearby and easy to drive to. A lovely, peaceful getaway.

Lovely pet friendly apartment in delightful and unusual setting

◉ ◉ ◉ ◉ ◉  2023 April

Humans and dogs are made to feel equally welcome at this lovely apartment in the unusual setting of Platform 1 Castle Howard. The accommodation was very comfortable and the owners welcoming and helpful. Plenty of good walking places and easy access to places of interest. We'll definitely go back again!

First Class all round

◉ ◉ ◉ ◉ ◉  2022 December

We arrived on a dismal December afternoon for a short break and were welcomed by Anne who had thoughtfully pre-set the heating. Underfloor heating, wonderful. The welcome basket included all local produce and the chocolate 'goodies' were perfect with a cup of tea in front of the log burner. Next day we headed to Malton 'Yorkshire's Food Capital' and then on to Castle Howard to walk around the grounds. Walking directly from the property, the Centenary Way going south took us on a leisurely walk to Kirkham Abbey and heading north through the woods to the village of Crambeck. We had a wonderful couple of days. Platform 1 is in a wonderful location, easy enough to drive further afield, yet perfect for just relaxing. The accommodation is very well-equipped, spotlessly clean and very comfortable. I wholeheartedly recommend Platform 1 for a short (or long) break and look forward to returning.

Fabulous BH weekend at Platform 1
Castle Howard Station

◉ ◉ ◉ ◉ ◉  2022 August

What an absolute find this Cottage was. Great location for this fabulous period property. So much History. Host Edmund & Ann (and dog Luna) are very welcoming & extremely helpful. Nothing was too much trouble for them. Property was lovely and clean, very well presented and great original features. walks from the doorstep and the Crown pub is a lovely 30 minute walk away. We really loved walking round the wild garden & pond and picking fruit of the trees. And we even got sunshine!! Thank you.

Platform One - what a location!

◉ ◉ ◉ ◉ ◉  2022 July

What a wonderful stay we had with Edmund and Ann at Platform One. It was idyllic, very well equipped and you couldn't ask for a better welcome from the hosts. The welcome basket was full of lovely food and if you are a twitcher watching the wildlife outside the windows is a joy. If you have dogs there are some lovely local walks and they will love Luna the very friendly inhabitant of Platform One. Booking is highly recommended as you won't be disappointed.

Excellent all round

◉ ◉ ◉ ◉ ◉  2022 June

I’ll start by saying that whilst it’s very dog friendly it was spotless on arrival without a hint that a dog had ever been present. The accommodation is very comfortable with all the amenities you could want. The beautiful outside space drinking tea and watching the wildlife is so relaxing, a true sun tap or windbreak depending what the weather requires. Ann and Edmund, the hosts, great you like friends and are so nice but never intrusive. They are there if wanted for anything and really can’t do enough but at the same time are quiet and invisible if you want peace. With a fully secure garden and excellent local walks this is the perfect place for dogs too. There are dog bowls and beds available and even a few treats. As for location, it is such a peaceful place at the end of its own road where you can relax and watch the wildlife with a couple of trains an hour passing your window. But it’s so close to so many places to visit if you do want to get the car out with York half an hour away and the coast hardly further. And if you don’t want to drive there’s a regular bus that runs between Leeds and Whitby/Scarborough that stops at the top of the road. I truly can’t find a negative, I’ll definitely be booking again and can’t praise it enough.

Stay and watch the trains

◉ ◉ ◉ ◉ ◉  2022 May

Excellent hosts Anne and Edmund and there was a welcome basket on arrival. Spacious lounge and kitchen, shower and wc and a further wc. Enclosed porch with table and chairs. Large bedroom. Outside, a further table and chairs. Plenty of space for parking and charging point for electric cars. The York to Scarborough like passes platform 1, so you can sit outside and watch the trains and plenty of birds, bluetits, woodpeckers for example. There are a number of walks nearby to explore with or without a dog. Very clean and recommended. Castle Howard is around 15 minutes drive away.

Perfect, restful break in a beautiful setting

◉ ◉ ◉ ◉ ◉  2022 May

Platform 1 is in a beautiful location, ideal for exploring the area and with some lovely walks right on the doorstep and a short drive to Castle Howard. The accommodation itself is clean, comfortable, fantastically equipped with everything you could need. We particularly loved the ambience in the sitting room which was the old station waiting room. Dog friendly with access to the wonderful garden and there’s even a resident dog who will happily tire out your dogs for free with circuits of the garden! Highly recommended.

'Magical'

◉ ◉ ◉ ◉ ◉  2022 May

What a Wonderful Magical place Platform 1 is to stay, the location is so quiet and peaceful even with the passing of a couple of local trains every hour, they pass so quickly you don't really notice them. Anne & Edmond are lovely welcoming owners with vast knowledge of the local area and the history of Platform 1. The Welcome Hamper is a lovely gesture containing locally sourced products, accommodation is very well presented and exceptionally clean, it is pretty much home from home surrounded by well maintained gardens which are totally secure and well fenced. The location is just off the A64, you could be in the heart of York within 20 mins or on the East coast in 45mins, Castle Howard is approx 3 miles away and is well worth a visit, call in at the local Deli 'The Dogh' in the village of Welburn for a coffee and home made sandwiches/cakes, pretty impressive! ...On the whole from the minute you arrive to the minute you leave you will feel welcomed, relaxed and your every need catered for during your stay with Anne and Edmond even though they stay invisible most of the time they are always at hand if needed. Thank you both for a 'Magical' few days at your 'Wonderful' property! Angela & Damion

Perfect

◉ ◉ ◉ ◉ ◉  2022 April

We had a perfect break, the location, accommodation and hosts were wonderful, stylish but cosy, warm and homely, the peace and quiet of the garden, watching the birds feeding just terrific, only broken by the occasional train, from the station there are some great walks without getting in the car, we have dogs so this is a perfect place, dog friendly and relaxed, we stayed Monday to Friday but if we could have we would have stayed on, didn't want to leave, also lots around if you do get the car out, coast not much more than 30mins, we loved it and will return, Thanks to Anne and Edmund & Luna of course.

Just Perfect

◉ ◉ ◉ ◉ ◉  2022 March

The wonderful restoration, the preservation & presentation of this idyllic building. The welcome pack of fresh eggs, bacon, butter & bread. The dawn chorus making itself heard before being outplayed by the first train of the day. Blue Tits. Long Tailed Tits, Buntings. Black Cap Warblers, Nut Hatches, Robins & Woodpeckers scurrying with squirrels for the remnants of yesterday's offerings. The rumble of the Class 68 & Class 185 locos as they pass by at 60mph just metres from the front door. The remaining scars of Nature's coup on the once manicured platforms and signal box. What is there not to like? It was a real privilege to stay for a week here in this comfortable building inspired by the TV programme "The Architecture the Railways Built" and the hospitality of our hosts Anne & Edmund was second to none.

Perfect pet friendly weekend break

◉ ◉ ◉ ◉ ◉  2022 January

Platform 1 at Castle Howard Station is perfect for a weekend break. There is so much to do in the area that 3 days really isn't enough. Castle Howard is only a short drive away as are Malton, Helmsley and York. The accommodation is beautifully presented and cared for. Inside it is light and bright and surprisingly modern. It is perfect if you are a dog owner as well. The owners haven't compromised on the furnishings, they just ask you to put a throw on the sofas or bed if you want your pet to sit or lie on them. Our dog loved the log burner and the underfloor heating after a couple of distinctly wet walks. Towels to dry your dog down are provided as well as bowls and treats. The area around the cottage is fenced and the owners let you walk your dog in their garden and there are woods nearby as well. Castle Howard Station is obviously right by the railway line but please don't let that put you off. There are only a couple of trains an hour during the day and frankly after the first couple you really don't notice them.

Cosy and welcoming dog friendly cottage in a historic setting

◉ ◉ ◉ ◉ ◉  2021 October

Castle Howard Station is an intriguing and historic location, originally a station house and still on a working train line. Part of the accommodation was previously the waiting room - with beautiful original features, and furnished comfortably with big sofas and a log burning stove. The kitchen is really well equipped and the bedroom and bathrooms comfortable and well designed. Outside there is a large and beautiful garden, which is a lovely peaceful spot. The owners are on site and very welcoming and helpful. It’s easy to visit the east coast from here, such as Robin Hood’s Bay and Whitby, as well as the lovely town of Malton nearby. Castle Howard is just a few miles away. There are two very nice pubs within five minutes drive which do great food, and a delightful deli and cafe in the local village.

Perfect pet-friendly place to relax

◉ ◉ ◉ ◉ ◉  2021 October

For our honeymoon we had some simple specifications: somewhere peaceful, with lots of character, railway-related if possible, and perhaps most importantly, a place we could bring our four-legged friend, Juke. Platform One fulfilled these with ease and offered much more besides. A warm welcome awaits you, which sets the charming tone of this beautiful house, and a basket of local goodies is a kindness that goes a long way. Anne and Edmund are friendly hosts; a tour of the property includes a circuit of the large garden, which is enclosed and calm. Take a moment to find one of the benches and enjoy the unruffled peace; it's a treat to watch the dragonflies whisper across the pond. You will no doubt meet Luna, a mere four month old pup when we visited: every ounce a bounce, she is a joyful presence and immediately takes charge. The accommodation is outstanding and full of character. There is plenty of natural light, and the large windows not only look out over the railway line but also a wealth of wildlife. The squirrels in particular are a worthy distraction. The space is bright and clean, neatly furnished and tastefully decorated, and warm and comfortable. The kitchen is well-equipped to suit all your culinary needs, or if you prefer to leave the cooking to others, Platform One is well-placed for nearby Malton and Welburn, which offer satisfying temptations for every appetite. We couldn't have been happier with our choice. This is a real home from home. It was the perfect place to plan our adventures, but also provided an environment in which to relax and enjoy our first week as a married couple.

Perfect place and location

◉ ◉ ◉ ◉ ◉  2021 September

A fantastic find! This cottage is excellent, it has everything you need, is very comfy and is set in a lovely outdoor space. It has a small courtyard to sit in, and benches to watch the trains pass at the front but you are welcome to use all the gardens that Anne and Edmund have. It is finished to a very high standard, well equipped and looked after and has a very comfortable bed! Just off the A64 very easy to find, well situated for visiting sights in the local area but away from the hustle when back at base. It was great coming back one night following the 3 badger bottoms waddling in the road in front of us. Anne and Edmund were very welcoming and on hand if needed (not that they were other than for a friendly chat) but not at all intrusive. Anne left a delicious welcome basket of goodies which saw us through the few days we were there since we dined out in the evening. There were some great local spots suggested by Anne for this, but plenty of others around too. We took the opportunity to eat at Tommy Banks Michelin Star restaurant, booked well in advance to get a slot but only a 35 minute drive away, but the Crown and Cushion in Welburn was an excellent local option too. Don't be put off by the trains if that is concerning you, they are not that frequent and hardly noticeable. You will probably be out most of the day exploring the surrounding area and they do not run overnight so no disturbed sleep. If we are heading away in this direction again I will definitely be checking out availability for another stay it was very enjoyable!

Beautiful accommodation and so pet-friendly

◉ ◉ ◉ ◉ ◉  2021 September

We arrived at this beautiful accommodation with our very excited rescue Golden Retriever on his first holiday, to be met my Anne who immediately made us all feel at home by showing us around the large enclosed gardens and wildlife pond that are both human and dog heaven! The accommodation although incredibly dog friendly is immaculate and spotlessly clean. The location of Platform 1 is ideal, it is within easy reach of many tourist attractions, and is a delight to return to at the end of the day. There is the added interest of being located beside an active railway, and the accommodation affords lovely outside seating areas, walks from the doorstep and dog-friendly pubs nearby. Anne and Edmund are delightful hosts without being intrusive, and we will definitely be returning to this amazing find. We are also looking forward to properly meeting their new puppy.

Wonderful accommodation, location and pet friendly

◉ ◉ ◉ ◉ ◉  2021 September

We realised as soon as we drove through the open gates into the beautiful grounds of Anne and Edmund's garden, that our holiday was going to be exceptional. We had a lovely warm welcome from Edmund who showed us around the immaculate Platform 1. The railway station accommodation was light, comfortable and contained everything we could possibly want. Edmund showed us all the bird feeders, which we kept filled up. We welcomed Tilda's (their whippet) presence at regular intervals - checking that we were happy. We loved sitting on the platform watching the birds, the the trains go by and revelling in the history of our surroundings, An evenings walk in Anne and Edmund's beautiful garden with our Bernese (dog) watching the pond life and the nature around us. Some lovely walks for the dog, a trip to Kirkham Priory and further afield - but always good to come back to the peace and tranquillity of Platform 1. We will return!!.

Wonderful place to stay with equally lovely hosts

◉ ◉ ◉ ◉ ◉  2021 September

We had a week at Platform 1 and it was lovely. Anne and Edmund were both so welcoming. It’s a great place for dogs, our puppy had great fun exploring the enclosed courtyard and the garden (plus a few trips into the big pond!!). The cottage is laid out well, cosy feel and great outdoor spaces for dogs and their humans! I’m not sure our puppy is going to give up the underfloor heating without a fuss! It’s location is fantastic, really easy to get to York, Whitby and Scarborough. We also discovered some delightful villages and towns with lovely (dog friendly) pubs and cafes within short drives. We would definitely recommend taking a holiday here, you can be as active or sedentary as you wish and still never be bored.

Lovely, historic and pet-friendly place to stay

◉ ◉ ◉ ◉ ◉  2021 August

We had an amazing long weekend at Platform 1. The accommodation is beautiful and the owners we so welcoming and friendly. It is a great place to walk and explore this beautiful part of the country. When Anne says "pet-friendly", she really means it. Our two dogs had an incredibly time exploring the huge garden and they were made to feel part of the family, as were we. I highly recommend this incredible place for those who want something a little different and have dogs who enjoy the extra love!

Second visit

◉ ◉ ◉ ◉ ◉  2021 August

This property is private and peaceful but also very close to a lot of North Yorkshire’s attractions especially Castle Howard. It’s very comfortable and well equipped, all on one level. It’s a great place to watch the trains, birdlife and squirrels from the comfort of the living room. There’s ample parking too. The owners are very friendly and pleasant. I cant wait to book again.

A relaxing oasis

◉ ◉ ◉ ◉ ◉  2021 July

We stayed here midweek and found it so peaceful and relaxing - the perfect antidote to hectic everyday life! The accommodation is equipped with everything you could need and is very comfortable for two people. The welcome basket with fresh local produce was a lovely touch. We enjoyed walks nearby and also took the park and ride into nearby York a few times. Would definitely recommend!

Rose-scented pastoral bliss

◉ ◉ ◉ ◉ ◉  2021 July

In addition to all the lovely things described in the blurb, the scents of Platform 1 are well worth mentioning: the climbing rose in the courtyard, and the roses and other scented plants in the gardens. Rosemary that can be put on the barbecue to enhance the meal. The range of wildlife around lifts the spirits, including endangered willow tits. And thieving squirrels. Hedgehogs taking early-morning strolls by the railway tracks. Rabbits in abundance, and a handsome cockerel down the lane who insists on a bit of personal procession-leading before allowing you to pass. The welcome basket provided delicious local foods, and the mammalian welcome was warm from Anne, Edmund and Tilda the dog. We brought our very nervous hound, and she relaxed in no time, and enjoyed playing with Tilda, who came to check on her every day. There's a lovely walk to Kirkham and its ruined abbey that goes through woodland and fields, with a dog-friendly pub at the end, in case you are in need of refreshment.

Quiet, comfortable and home from home

Loved the whole set up including the railway. Quiet, cosy and relaxing. Also appreciated Anne and Edmund ‘going the extra mile’ for us. Loads round about to enjoy so you can be as active or peaceful as suits.
